Projecto Semillas !

COLLABORATION WITH ZIMBABWAN ARTIST JACOB MAFULENI

> Initiated in 2018 with Zimbabwean artists Martha Thom and Jacob Mafuleni, the ‘Sambrando’ project, renamed ‘Semillas’ in honour of Martha Thom, who recently passed away, finally came to fruition in 2024 during a creative residency on the reintroduction of the marimba into Peruvian music. The instrument used by Afro-descendants during the colonial period is no longer found in contemporary Afro-Peruvian music. Jacob, a renowned percussionist and luthier, brought a marimba of his own making to Lyon to work for a month with Mirtha at the African Cultural Centre in Lyon. The residency ended in late June 2024, and a first concert produced by the Métropole de Lyon during the Dialogues en l'humanité festival took place on 5 July 2025. At the same time, Afro-Peruvian and Zimbabwean singing workshops were organised at the CCA, and mbira workshops were organised at the Cefedem in Lyon and Crest.
